What are crimp dies?
Crimp dies are components used within crimping tools, which are used to make solderless electrical connections and terminate wires. Crimping diessit within the head of the tool. When the tool is squeezed, they compress the crimp barrel - containing the wire and the terminal it is being connected to.
Crimping dies are used in metalworking and electronics to make permanent connections between wires and terminals. Using a crimping die can offer a range of benefits compared to other connection methods such as soldering and wire wrapping:
- Versatile - Most good crimping tools can be used with a wide range of crimp dies, providing versatile operation across various wire and terminal types, shapes, and gauges.
- Gas-tight - Once it's properly crimped, a wire is completely gas-tight, preventing moisture from entering the wire and corrosion from taking place.
- Durable - Crimped wires are also much tougher and more resistant to physical stresses.
- Safe - Using a crimping die instead of a high-temperature soldering iron and potentially harmful solder is a much safer option.
- Inexpensive - Compared to soldering or wire wrapping, the usage of crimping dies is quicker, uses less wire, and doesn't require the additional purchase of solder, reducing costs.
Which crimp die should you use?
There are diverse types of wire crimping dies on offer. To find the right product for your requirements, consider the following:
Primary type
What is the sort of hydraulic crimping die product you require? Are you looking for a specific die head, or do you need a die nest, into which crimp dies are placed? Alternatively, would a full set of die tools be more valuable?
Type
Crimping dies are available for use with a wide range of wire types, with this choice impacting the shape of the cavity in the die. Your choice will be informed by the type of wire and terminal you're crimping. Coaxial, circular, ethernet, fiber optic, D-Subminiature, modular plug and many more can be found in our inventory.
Application
This refers to the size of the cavity in the crimp die, measured in inches (particularly for hexagonal, or HEX, crimping), AWG (American Wire Gauge) or kcmil (thousands of circular mills - a circular mil being the area of a 1 mil-diameter wire). Our crimping dies come in sizes from 0.025 to 0.429 HEX, 1 to 30 AWG and 250 to 600 kcmil.
Connector and cable types
When purchasing crimping dies, you need to know the type of cable you are working with and the connectors it is being attached to, as this will also inform your choice.
